Mentions in Dispatches – August 28 and 29

Bandanas and Six Point Bucks

Saturday and Sunday were fairly slow prostate cancer awareness days since governments are closed on the weekends and, I learned, are most smaller town newspapers.

Jan Abernathy. Jan gets a really big mention because I had lost my signature red bandana to the wind along the road from Columbia, SC to Jan and Joan’s lake cabin near Clarksville, GA.

After stopping in four stores I had given up.  I mentioned this to Jan and 48.9 seconds later I had a new red bandana.  I’m sartorially correct once again.  Thanks, Jan!!

Dave Needs a Deer Whistle

Highway 80 west from Montgomery, AL to Jackson, MS is flat, straight, pretty empty and fast.

As I entered western Mississippi I went through a long stretch of forested area that reminded me of the pine forests in southern Germany.

I light mist was falling as a passed a series of warning signs for deer crossings.  I was busy giving my usual “V” sign to overtaking cars and as the last of a group of cars moved past I glanced to the right side of the road and looked eye-to-eye with a six point buck.

Where Rudolph Choose to Hold His Ground

I’m not certain what he was thinking, but he elected not to cross the road at that moment.  So I’ll christen him “Rudolph” and formally thank him to staying put.  Thanks, Rudolph!

It looks like you’re headin’ toward SW Arkansas. Sorry I haven’t kept up with where you are since you were east of Indiana. There are a lot of deer here too that like to graze on the roadside at night. I always drive slow enough to stop easily in case one is lookin’ to cross the road. Good luck on your trip. We’ll be watchin’ for you. Kenneth Maxey, Lockesburg, Ar.

  2. Hi Kent. I’m in Little Rock today and tomorrow morning. Then Ft Smith tomorrow afternoon. On Thursday I head for Austin, TX via Nagadoches (I have a hard time spelling that name) TX. Good tip on the deer. Best, Robert
